Clematis x hybrida 'The Vagabond' is a compact, early-flowering clematis known for its striking deep purple flowers with a velvety texture and contrasting red stamens. Its manageable size and repeat-blooming habit make it ideal for small gardens, containers, trellises, and fences.

Description:

  • Dimensions: Grows to a height of 4-6 feet with a spread of 2-3 feet. Its compact habit makes it suitable for smaller spaces and containers.
  • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun to part sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering, while its roots benefit from shade to keep cool.
  • Water Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly, especially in dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Hardiness Zones: Hardy in Zones 4-9, making it adaptable to a wide range of climates.
  • Bloom Time: Blooms in late spring to early summer and reblooms in late summer to early fall. The large, deep purple flowers measure 4-6 inches across and have a slightly ruffled appearance.
  • Foliage: Deciduous, with dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the vibrant flowers.
  • Pruning: Pruning Group 2 (light pruning). In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak stems and cut back remaining stems to a strong set of buds to encourage reblooming.

How to Plant:

  • Location: Ideal for trellises, fences, arbors, and containers. Can also be grown through shrubs or small trees for a naturalized look.
  • Soil Preparation: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Mulch around the base to keep the roots cool and moist.
  • Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant 2-3 inches deeper than it was in the pot to encourage strong root development.
  • Spacing: Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow room for growth and airflow.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first growing season to help establish roots.

Fun Fact:

Clematis x hybrida 'The Vagabond' is known for its intense purple blooms and compact growth habit, making it a favorite choice for smaller garden spaces. Unlike some clematis varieties, it flowers on both old and new wood, ensuring a long-lasting display throughout the growing season.
