Clematis x hybrida 'Gipsy Queen' is a striking, late-flowering clematis variety known for its deep purple, velvety blooms and vigorous climbing habit. This classic flowering vine is perfect for trellises, arbors, fences, and containers, adding vertical interest and vibrant color to any garden.

Description:

  • Dimensions: Grows to a height of 8-12 feet with a spread of 3-4 feet. Its twining vines will climb supports or sprawl if left untrained.
  • Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun to part sun. Requires at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for best flowering, but benefits from having its roots shaded to keep them cool.
  • Water Requirements: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Hardiness Zones: Hardy in Zones 4-9. Suitable for a wide range of climates with proper care.
  • Bloom Time: Blooms from midsummer to early fall, producing large, rich purple flowers that measure 4-6 inches across. The flowers contrast beautifully against its dark green foliage.
  • Foliage: Deciduous, with lush, dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the striking flowers.
  • Pruning: Classified as Pruning Group 3 (hard pruning). Cut back to 12-18 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring to encourage strong new growth and abundant blooms.

How to Plant:

  • Location: Ideal for trellises, fences, pergolas, and containers. Can also be grown through shrubs or small trees for a naturalized look.
  • Soil Preparation: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Mulch around the base to keep the roots cool and moist.
  • Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant 2-3 inches deeper than it was in the pot to encourage strong root development.
  • Spacing: Space plants 3-4 feet apart to allow room for climbing and spreading.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first growing season to establish roots.

Fun Fact:

Clematis x hybrida 'Gipsy Queen' was introduced in 1877 and remains a favorite among gardeners for its bold, velvety purple blooms. It pairs beautifully with climbing roses, making a stunning combination of colors and textures in the landscape.
