Western red cedar can live for more than 150 years and grow to 120 feet tall and 60 feet wide. Select a planting location that allows enough room for this large, long-lived tree.

Western red cedar grows best in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates most types of soil, including those found in coastal areas. Western red cedar tolerates highly acidic soils to those which are moderately alkaline. Western red cedar grows natively in moist forests throughout the Pacific Northwest. For this reason, it needs moist conditions to thrive. Western cedar, like many evergreens, produces volatile oils and is not fire-resistant.
